The Final Farewell
The elders of the church in Ephesus evidently were summoned by the apostle Paul to meet him in Miletus (Acts 20:17,18). To them Paul delivered a farewell address that touches the heart and stirs the spirit. At the conclusion of his charge to them, there is recorded one of the tenderest scenes of the sacred oracles. “And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spoke, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship” (Acts 20:36-38).
Mature men wept unashamedly at the prospect of Paul’s departure and impending death. They embraced him and sprinkled his garments with their tears. Few of us are spared the agony of such moments. We savor the last, lingering minutes of association with loved ones while our hearts break in contemplation that we shall see their face no more. Like the wrinkled brow and the bowed back, it is one of the realities of life.
But there is coming a time when the hour of separation will be destroyed and an everlasting brotherhood with God, the heavenly host, and all the redeemed of the ages shall be ours to enjoy. I like to think that the Ephesian elders comforted themselves with that fact as they watched Paul’s ship slide beneath the horizon.
