Nothing New
There is “nothing new under the sun.” This is as true when it comes to attitudes as with anything else, and we become keenly aware of this when it comes to times like election years. Cycle after cycle it’s always the same. The same raw attitudes are seen and heard. The same ugliness is displayed. We just don’t seem to learn, and whatever the problem is, it’s always “their” fault. No matter what. We dig our heels in, get angry, and call out the “others” for their lack of desire to do what is right. This happens every time. Every time. It has gotten worse throughout my lifetime. Generation after generation does the same thing. Over and over. I'm guilty.

Christians ought to see times like this as opportunities —opportunities to show love for those who consider themselves our enemies; opportunities to show why the gospel is so needed; opportunities to take up the cross and deny self; opportunities to grow closer to God; opportunities to be the salt and light the Lord has called us to be; opportunities to “put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator” (Col 3:10).

Social media feeds are known to be filled with “gotchas,” angry accusations, and little grace. This is why it is imperative to look in the mirror and see where “I” can improve. If people aren’t seeing “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control...” then they aren’t seeing evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Gal 5:22-23). If they aren’t seeing whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent, then they aren’t seeing anything praiseworthy from us (Phil 4:8). If they aren’t seeing compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, bearing with one another, and forgiveness, then they aren’t seeing evidence of the new creation putting on holiness (Col 3:12-13). If they aren’t seeing love, they aren’t seeing that which “binds everything together in perfect harmony” and evidence that the peace of Christ is ruling in our hearts as His word dwells richly within (Col 3:14-16). Do you think any of this matters?

I can do better. Can you?–Doy Moyer
